minor piece vs. three pawns

which would you prefer: to be down a knight or bishop with three compensated pawns or vice versa? afterall, it is equal points...

also, does your opinion change whether it is middle or end game?

well...if its endgame the pawns, middlegame it depens on the position, opening also depends on the position...

It so depends on the position... You might create a position (or look in a database for some games) and ask about it specifically.

It depends very much on the position. In the endgame, sometimes it can be worth it to trade a piece for two pawns, or even one.

In a endgame probably three pawns on average, but it's really all about the position at hand.

I like having the 3 pawns, especially in the endgame.

If it's three pawns isolated in the endgame, you want the minor piece, if they're connected then you want the pawns.

And if the pawns are passed you probably take the pawns.
