Bobby Fischer may have a solid claim to being the most famous player ever, but Capablanca was very famous in his lifetime - without any TV or internet coverage. So how can you even compare the degree of fame attained in totally different eras?
Morphy - Allies Paris 1858 is often called the most famous game of chess ever played, but this is just a matter of opinion too since fame can't be measured as precisely as time or temperature for instance

He means Levitsky-Marshall, 1912.

Am I the only pleb who has not so much as looked at a puzzle? Nevermind remembering what they are named! I also couldn't tell a morphy game from a kasparov one :/.

Most famous chess player in the United States would have to be Fischer. Worldwide, most likely Kasparov.
