Mother Nature V. Chess

In the past, I have had a lot of bad luck with storms.  When it comes to chess, the most memorable one for me was Tropical Storm Irene.  Yes, it was a hurricane and was bound to hit my home town.  With the forecast, I got nervous, and remember GM Natalia Pognina's thread, "Under Pressure" where I also added an annotation?  Well, I was under a lot of pressure with this storm as well.  And, it was a first time, that after coaching, instead of doing better, I played a lot worse.  The worry was even with Game Postponement, I'd lose power for weeks which would lead to a loss by timeout.  Instead, the opposite happened, as I was in a rush determining not to let that happen.  So, I moved far too quickly, without giving any time to analyze it.  This led to a lot of mistakes, and over 10 losses from that storm.  In fact, my rating plummited by, at least, 100 points in a short amount of time.  And, the fear of losing power became a reality, but it didn't last nearly as long as I thought.

Then, came a much stronger storm, which wasn't just a Tropical Storm.  But, it was a Hurricane combined with a Noreaster, making it a Superstorm.  It was Superstorm Sandy, and it hit the area a lot worse, and this is the one that knocked out power for over a week.  Plus, I lost Cable for almost twice as long.  It also destroyed my neighbors car.  In addition, I almost timed out on a game, and, therefore, needed an emergency postponement.  But, despite the magnitute of that storm, I played much better and have also improved.  In fact, I won 5 games.  However, there were games that I still lost by being put under pressure.  And, like before, the pressure caused me to forget two very important things that GM's emphasize.  They are, following the General Opening Guidelines since I did not develop properly and not attempting cheapo tacitcs as I was making obvious mate threats that could easily be driven off.  The idea behind the unsound aggression was to prepare for the worst of the storm, which is what happened so that I'd know what to do when it hits.  But, the fear and trying to get ready for something that would be real ugly, led to a loss.  At the same time, however, that storm was good for learning purposes.  And, that is a reason that I view mother nature as a mentor, believe it or not.

Later on, with the 2015 blizzard 2-3 feet of snow, as well as, 60 mph wind gusts were forecasted for the area.  Thankgoodness I dodged the bullet, as a power outage was also a big risk.  But, even if I had lost power for a long time, I would have played just as well, since I learned something very important from both Tropical Storm Irene and Super Storm Sandy.  Therefore, I knew eactly what to do, that time around.

What's the moral to this story?  Well, I learned something essential.  It's important to prepare for a bad storm and take precautions, but it's not a good idea to get over worried or panick too much, as that can only make a situationh worse.  Instead, of thinking of the worst that can happen, think of the best case scenario's.  Doing that will help you in chess, as well as, life.

No! It's Chessman!
Who is he? Is he black or white?

We don't know...
...all we know... is that he got his suit from the pawn shop.

Okay I'll stop...

You're a rockstar man, wouldn't do that myself, hope you didn't take too much damage...

Thanks, Spartycus.  Tropical Storm was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be.  But, everything that I was worried about during that storm became a reality with Superstorm Sandy.  Yes, it did a lot of damage.  But, I survived.

Joey: You know you might get more people to read that if you broke it up into some bite-sized chunks (paragraphs).  That dense flood of text is kind of daunting, given the typical attention spans on forums like this.  I guarantee that's putting off a substantial number of potential readers

@now_and_zen: Thanks for the suggestions.  I was worried about running out of room because on other chess sites, that has happened.  But, I have now seperated this into four paragraphs.

Tropical Storm Nimzo.  Hurricane Checkmate.

@Now_and_zen: Because you asked me about this storm, and I wanted to show viewers a game that I lost due to distractions by Superstorm Sandy, and how it compared to Tropical Storm, I have annotated a game that I lost by mother nature.  So, I am combining two threads into one.  With that, the annotation is shown below.   http://www.chess.com/forum/view/game-analysis/superstorm-sandy
