    Hi all...

How many moves should we plan in advance? Is there any specific number of opponents move that we must consider before making our move?

I hope you all understand my question...

( for eg. If i gain advantage in the game earlier and or the game is headed to an end soon...how many successive moves of the opponent i should consider to continue the lead or play a defensive tackle to maintain the lead? )

thanksĀ  all of you for the valuable comments and suggestions..

    Hav a nice day

I think that 5-10 moves ahead is enough on the beginner to intermediate level. I usually try to find the best move that the opponent can't do much about. Ex: A double attack on two pieces. Your opponent can not defend both and must lose one or the other. Also consider if your opponent has any serious check threats that you must defend later on. This makes your pieces more defensive.

If you are ahead try to defend your pieces that are unprotected since they will become targets for your opponents. If you have all your pieces defended and your king well protected. Your opponent will hard a hard time of finding a way to attack your pieces.
