When you play e mail chess transcription move from chess computers or chess books is forbidden, because it is not your game. So, you are not learning chess, but only do a transcription.

You learn if you transcript the book as the book transcription is only about openings, and if at the same time you understand the moves (they usually explain the moves in books) then you will learn the opening correctly.

Mr.Etienne. I agree with you that you will learn the opening if you transcript the book, but my point of view is rather different because that'll be not authentic match. In that case we have match between Human vs. Book (It is a person who looks  in book on every move when play the chess), or Human vs. Computer( Of course who looks in chess program on his move). During the match you must play your own game, from your memory, not from your books. Is that okay?

Looking at a book on every move is unacceptable.  But I agree with our friend from Montreal ...this is an educational process and learning the openings is essential.

Email/Turn/OnLine chess is a modern approach to the days of postal chess. The idea of which allows one to analyze and become better at the game. Opening books and databases are unavoidable now-a-days, and though it seems wrong this is not a tournament.

There are no prizes accept the gift of education from what you learn.  It is up to you how you want to achieve this education, but do not allow the thought of others using books bother you. Instead concentrate on the lessons learned, won or lost. However, if all you are interested in is winning, and gaining points, then you will find that you have lost your way to achieving the greater goal of becoming a better player.
