Anyone here about UBI putting out a new Chessmaster game?  It's been 3 years since the 10th edition came out and I'm eager to see the next one.

I think you'd like it. Chessmaster does have a lot of stuff that can help you; tactic trainers, puzzles, annotated games, a ton of material by Josh Waitzkin that covers just about every aspect of the game, a ton of computer personalities to play against (but playing real people is more fun of course), and tons more. I am sure you could get a copy pretty cheap from eBay or something. Chessmaster 8000, 9000 and 10th Edition really aren't all *that* different but you might as well get 10th Edition, the latest one.

But yeah, like Erik said, I don't know what else could really be added to it.. I am sure the new version will be 95% the same as 10th edition.

Yeah but the graphics could use an overhaul and I'd love to see a few more animated board sets. :D  From a teaching and technical side the game is fairly set, like you said.

I've actually seen the 10th edition in my local video game store for £5, the price of a packet of fags!! unbeatable bargain!

I will translate jona004s' English English into American English. A packet of fags in American English is a pack of cigarettes.

Thank you for your sarcasm nimbleknight, but i don't think americans are that thick that they don't know that English fags are cigarettes.

No one I've talked to knew that "fags" was English English for cigarettes, sorry. It's really not a very nice word at all in American English, actually. Also, I am certainly not "thick". I am 6'1" 160lbs. But maybe the "thick" comment had nothing to do with my weight..?  :)

Thick means dumb or stubborn ... unless you knew that and you were being sarcastic.

If anyone gets a chance to play 10th edition do yourself a favor and soak up everything from Josh Waitzkin Academy... excellent excellent material. He really opened my eyes to high level chess. Of course there is probably much better teachers then Josh, but I doubt anything that was put together so well... If you know of anything equal as a teaching tool then please let me know.

i think the next edition of chessmaster should include a coffee maker, or at least a six pack of energy drinks.

We know what it means, but as with bonnet and slapper, it's still sounds funny. Speaking of which, what do Brits call the entire run of a television show, since the individual seasons are called "series?"

As to Chessmaster 10, I recently started using it. I played around with Fritz 10 for a while, but I think that CM is more well suited for the novice player, it is for this one in any event. If Ubisoft develops a new version, I'll buy it at the first opportunity.

Scottish English is similar to the English English and here fags also means ciggies, however I am most certain that we here in the English English word also have the same translation for fags as you do in the Americal English.

Another area of misinterpretation I came across was when i spent time in Canada. At home we have a local (pub) called Fanny By Gaslight (old time speak for what it sounds like, need clarification then ask). These guys print T-shirts etc for the locals and this particular one read 'Fannies for Christmas' meaning going to the pub of the same name, however ir did have the double entendre of exactly that.

When wore in Canada however I did get some strage and peculiar looks.

Probably because they did not know the pub and whay on earth anyone would want a back-side for their xmas, did they think I was I an english Ciggie?

Still enough of that as for ChessChallenge, I had a version not to long ago and used the one off games for practice, these worked fine and gave good practice (although I prefered to play the monkey), but when I tried the rated challenge I found no matter what time I set or the player I chose after several moves the opponent would just tme out, has anyone else had this experiance?

Did email the makers and all they said was to uninstall and reinstall and said my computer specs were fine.

thanks
