What does it mean when a move is annotated as being "a novelty?"

That means it's the first time it's ever been played in a master game.  It's also called a TN (for theoretical novelty).  It's always in the opening...although of course what's called the opening is nearing the 20th move in some instances and even going beyond! (as knowledge progresses).
