''They only differ to the extent of their madness.''             GM Korchnoi

The Grandfather has been a speculative philosopher of competitive chess!

From a narrow point of view, one may assume that paranoia and autism have a high incidence among chessplayers at large!!

On the other hand, could it be that grandmasters are just peculiar logicians, who think beyond the conceptual norms of mainstream society?!

fburton

There's no such thing as intelligence, only relative levels of stupidity.

Depending upon what you think are the "conceptual norms of mainstream society"? In my view, mainstream society is an embarrassing dialogue between morons, where being considered intelligent has no value whatsoever.

JacksofClubs

It's a stereotype. nothing more.

Xmcp

The only way to be a GM or an IM is to be obessed with chess! (Nothing nothing such as a genius who was born as a magicain at chess, if garry kasparov never started playing chess at the age of 5, he would not be the best chess player in history so far!)

sisu

Let's make it happen!

GM Scorchino flew by the seat of his pants and saw the world through an opaque lens.

unfortunately, too many chessers are egomaniacs and bring the game down many notches and talk through their .... loud car horn sound ...

So, he was using an impaired brain to make judgements about impaired brains?

I'd say that's crazy but it's possible I'd be using an impaired brain to make a judgement about someone with an impaired brain, judging impaired brains.

Conflagration_Planet

So, who is?

Xmcp

I agree with this topic

Xmcp

Con_planet no GM is normal!

CalamityChristie

patzers are normal

AlCzervik

Well, Calamity, I'm a patzer (as you know) and I've rarely been called normal!

MyCowsCanFly

"All generalizations are false, including this one."

Hey I'm 53, started playing chess at 43. Just learned how to play at that age. Quit playing for 10 years until 3 years ago and I've been able to beat USCF rated players at the chess club up to NM. Not bad for someone who never went to high school and just worked hard all my life. You'll only get out of chess what you put into it. By the way Bobby Fischer is the greatest chess player of all time, not Kasparov.

I fully agree. But as for the topic of this thread, what is "normal" ?

To paraphrase a psychiatrist I once met:  Being normal means that you have the same abnormalities as the majority of the population.

If your 53 now, and you started playing at 43, you can't fit 10 years between 43, and 3 years ago.

I'm sorry you are correct. I think I had a senior moment there. I didn't play for 7 years. Thank you for the correction.

beerainsdone

the more you play, the better and quicker you get at playing. i wondered about that too when i first started playing. learning at a young age greatly helps.

MyCowsCanFly

I think I confused myself. I meant GM Korchnoi might have been using an impaired brain to judge other impaired brains by viture of him being a GM, given the supposition by the OP that a GM is not normal. I didn't mean as a result of his age.

We should all be as fortunate as GM Korchnoi in terms of productivity.
