On the subject of draws

So I just noticed in online chess that when a threefold repition occurse, there is no offer draw button, only a claim draw button. After threefold repition, is it not legal to still be able to ask for a draw?? (not necessarily claim it as your opponent could still decline.) I know what you are thinking, why ask for a draw when you could claim it. But hypothetically, one could only want to draw if the opponent also wanted to have a draw.

Well, just ignore the button, then. If he wants to play on, he plays on. If he wants to draw, he claims.

So it would be like the 2-key firing system used to safeguard nuclear missile launches? Both players would need to press the CLAIM DRAW button (simultaneously) to ensure Mutually Assured Draws and avoid accidents.

You say you know what we are thinking - "Why ask for a draw when you can claim it?"  And you are correct.

Your hypothetical isn't realistic, are both players going to continue repeating the position just because they do not wish a draw, or one does not?

In most World Championship matches, draws outnumber decisive games by more than 2-1.  It's no disgrace, and your opponent's wishes are already clear, since he has repeated the position.

Why are conclusions never won or lost - only ever drawn?

Maybe it's like some courtrooms-- no cameras allowed.

Apart from proceedings that are held "in camera".
