I don't win often in live chess.  However, on numerous occasions when my opponent has no chance (very low on time, etc.), I am offered a draw.  this has happened over and over again.  why?  I notice no one ever offers me a draw when  I have no chance. what's going on?

I sometimes reply: "Did you mean the button just to the right of that?"

    (i.e. Resign)

I dont play live, but in a correspondance game I have going I just got a draw offer in a game where I was two pawns up with the ability to produced a passed pawn.  While certianly not a forced win yet, it was far from hopeless.  Just decline nicely, and keep playing.

If you were really beating me in a game would you offer me a draw?  come on.

Bad etiquette but it happens. Just decline or play the move (which is same as declining). Sometimes I write down something like : nice try ; did you really think that would work; ...

Well, if we eliminate the possibility that your opponent saw something you didn't or that he's oblivious to his impending doom because he's a patzer then yeah he's a dweeb.

    Mate him.

interesting. My daughter (6) had a similar experience, but she did not quite understood the concept, so she accepted (but I won daddy!). Now she is as nasty as the rest ....

I've always responded to such draw offers from opponents in lost positions the same way:  "Let's play a bit longer" - or just ignore the offer and move.

Just to provide a bit of insight into possible motives for your opponent.

Sometimes in blitz I'll be very short on time, and forcing checks with a Rook and/or Queen. If I can get a string of checks going, I don't have time to think if the position has been repeated twice or thrice, so I just hit the draw button.

    Absurd

Every now and again I find an opponent who spams draw offers in Live Chess in dead lost positions. I point out that the "Resign" button is below the one he keeps smashing and continue playing. Then, as time permits, I promote as many pawns as possible before winning the game and mentioning that I kept declining the draws because I thought I had winning chances (crazy, I know!).

This might seem passive-aggressive, because it is, but I've never had someone do that to me twice.
