Does anyone happen to know a free program to convert PDF  files to TXT files(or similar)?

That is one is for python and can be run on both linux and windows systems. You just need to download python and figure out how python works. That would be a bit much for me to explain here.

I use the free OpenPDF to convert PDF to Word Docs (or WordPad). Provided you have MS Word installed, you can then save as plain text.

 You already might have solved your problem, but I might be able to help you. I have Adobe Acrobat Professional(shareware), and it can convert PDF into a readable PDF file(OCR - Optical Character Recognition).  If you want to make some PDF into readable ones, you can send it to me and I would convert it.
