play till the last move everytime... play the full game... then only u can improve ur end games... u can say at times that at one stage the game is obviously lost and there's no use of playing till the last move, but there's the key... when u c the positions of the pieces placed in the board u might get new ideas that can be done to protect or attack... so play the full game...

Usually, though, when people resign, its like 2 moves to mate or similar.

I guess when you are seriously behind in material, you can shift your focus from trying to win, to trying to set up a Staleamte.

By my last games I also conclude that the game should be played until the last move, that's intersting... that's your character... that's experience in some parts of the game (middle or closing)...

when you are down in matiereal you might be very creative, of course you can run out of good moves pretty fast too.

Agree, mainly because your opponent is not always thinking the same way, which is rare, but happens - and a match is a match - is like tennis or other sports - last point is the winning point.

In the other hand, some players resign very earlier as a sign of respect to the opponent, to his capacity.

But, as chess is a game, I agree that even losing, playng till the end is a pleasure.

OMG do you guys know how many flipping posts there are about how you should play on to the last move or resign out of respect? its just unbelivable and annoying beyond belief.

LEARN TO USE THE GOD DAMN SEARCH FUNCTION

just try doing a search of 'resign' and see how many forum threads there are on this flipping topic.

There there, everything is going to be ok.

As for Yuvaraj - I would not walk away from a game of snooker or pool if my opponent has the black lined up perfectly to win. That would be silly. The number of times someone has come over to shake my hand and say good game when they have the black lined up and close to the pocket but havent even sunk it yet. I say "take the shot first". Chess is similar.

lithium11: chess is only similar if you are hoping that your opponent has an aneurism or something. There is luck in some other games/sports that just isn't there in chess - this is why people often resign. A better analogy is a race, where it's you against the other guy - and he is 1 foot from the finish line. You are about 100m back. In that case, you only win if he has a heart attack or something.

hm there is justified arguments for both sides of this topic. I only play until the end if there is any chance at all, but when its an end game I recognize, like two pawns v K or R v K etc, there is really no point on going on. Resign, rest up, and prepare for the next round. But I agree though, playing til the end will help for your end games.

The analogy with a sport like tennis is flawed. In each point of a tennis match I can play up to my full ability no matter how many points I have lost previously. But this is not so in chess. When we are significantly behind in material in chess it's like playing tennis with no racket. If you played a tennis match where a 5-0 lead in a set meant you play the next game with no racket, surely you'd resign that set.

To each his own. No one can tell another how to play. I was once a die-hard believer that it's in poor taste to needlessly drag out an obviously lost game. Having said that, I have personally experienced (too many times) the other side of such a game; i.e., when I had a superior game, ahead in material, better position, etc., only to find myself either drawing (sometimes in a stalemate) or losing altogether.

One of the beauties of this game we all love is it variety. Each game is unique - as are each of us. To each his own!

If some one offers you a draw, he's either desperate or it's damn obvious it's a draw. Unless you know the guy personally (your real world friend,) then the rules might be slightly different.

If its damn obvious mate in two or something with a typical rook exchange and back rank mate sequence then just let him play it out.

If it's damn obvious that you're losing on material very very badly, then resign, rather than humiliate youself by letting him toy with you.
