Being new here, I bookmarked what I thought were the pertinent pages, including those on which my online games are being played. It seems to only way to access the games and get them to [i]work[/i] is to go through the home page and click on the PLAY button. Is that right?

You should be able to go here:
http://www.chess.com/echess/myhome.html
But if you're not logged in, that won't work. I use the "stay logged in" feature. Though I also never close my browswer so chess.com is always up somewhere. From any chess.com page you can click on "Online Chess" in the "My Home" menu on the top right.
