After a few months of dealing with my sporadic chess instruction, my son (age 5) had his first "match" against one of his peers, a chessplaying friend over for a playdate. And my little boy demolished him in both of the games they played. Once, admittedly, my son mated his opponent "by accident" (thinking it was just another check), though at a point when he had a significant material advantage; in the second game, he managed (with only minor prompting) a K+Q v K mate.

I'm not saying he's the next Magnus Carlsen; but when you see your child execute a K/R knight fork, your heart just goes pitter-patter. Just wanted to share that with a friendly audience.

5, huh? You should get a coach for him then; he'll become the next Bobby Fischer :)

Sounds like he is really taking it up well and who knows how good he could actually be?  I mean everyone starts somewhere, once upon a time Gary Kasparov learned which way a Knight moved. Smile
