well 2... Kxf5 does not have to be played and Black can just play Re8 and push the pawn were White will not be able to stop the e-pawn from queening

3Ke4 holds, as you mentioned, a pawn race loses.

Now black either passively blocks or checks from behind.  I think both cases lose.  I confess I lack the energy to re-elaborate.  What book is this? Most authors would clarify.
