Something I've noticed....now granted, I'm not a great player by any sense of the world...not even good most likely lol.
Ratings here seem to be lower than most other places...my rating in standard games in around 1350 or so...other sites, those would be cakewalks.....here, even 1250 players seem to be tough (for me). Other sites I seem to be in the 15-1600 ratings consistently...I was surprised by some of my losses to 1300 and lower (not the ones where I apparenlty though I was playing checkers.)
So for those that play here and other sites....do you find the ratings here closer to the "real" thing OTB, or inflated like others?
From everything I can tell, Chess.com works very hard to make sure that the artificial means of inflating rating is held in check by banning cheaters, which other sites don't bother to do. As a result, good players have lower ratings, because individuals cannot farm the masses using that cheater program that is on yahoo all the time for example.
There are enough FM, IM, and GMs floating around where they can spot, and defeat program users using anti-computer program tactics. Also, I just read about a young woman who had her brothers account banned because they simply played rated chess against one another on the same machine. This COULD be construed as rating inflation if someone were unscrupulous about it, creating multiple accounts and then playing against "yourself". All in all, the measures this site takes to make sure it's as close to "over the board" as possible is admirable. No cheaters to farm for rating points means overall the rating system stays deflated, coupled with the fact that if you lose to someone far below you in rating, yours is affected greatly, especially if you had the white pieces.
Even OTB there will be a lot of variation across the different national rating systems and FIDE. Just play, and don't pay too much attention to the number next to a persons name.
Thanks for the informative posts! I do like this site because of the stronger players at lower ratings. It just shocked me!
