Wonder if Mortzy views you as a hack, now that he whipped you twice in a row.

I am aware of the many definitions of the word hack, as I am sure you are aware of the many definitions for the word ass, all of which apply.

There is no need to get upset at me for pointing out the obvious and resort to childish name calling, is there ?

Check post #18 , I believe thats where it started and YOU started it.......how am I to know in advance how an opponent will behave? Believe me, if I know in advance they won't resign a completely hopeless position I do NOT play them.

Don't sweat it, dude.  Old Reb is from Georgia, where the clay is red, and books aren't.

You are right.  Post #18 (above) was a vicious attack from me.  I should be banned from the site for such a post as violent as that one.

God have mercy on me Yell

Fair enough.  Reb can have the last word.

Take it away.

This should be listed as an example in the dictionary under hipocrisy.

 In Webstur's dictionary, perhaps.

Apparently you dont seem to understand that "hack" is not an insult and it only means a weak player. However, calling someone an "ass" IS an insult, at least where I come from. If a GM calls me a "hack" I am NOT insulted by it.

ok so back to the subject (if I may) I'd have to agree with reb's statement (not in the whole discussion), apart from the weak or strong players.

Since I get players stronger than me who are certain I will blunder away my advantage of a rook and a knight(for example) since I'm so dumb and not nearly as good as he/she. Now THAT is an insult. If someone weaker than me plays on I can understand it's because of learning new things or just a lack of experience.

I don't like people playing on especially when they assume I'm not up to it (only if they don't prove me wrong). But you can't really blame them.

[about the discussion at hand: hack is not an insult per se, but it can very well be insulting.]

Reb, you check their rating.  If it's <1500, then you know there is a very good chance they will play on regardless.  If you dont want to rule out playing people of this rating, then I think you should relax, and take it as a compliment.  Finishing the game is likely no more a waste of your time than the rest of the game was after the first few moves anyway.  I dont know how you can get through life if you get INSULTED by something as tiny as someone playing out a chess game.  Also, you seem to whine about it quite frequently, so you make an easy target for anyone who feels like winding up a master.  Tongue out

Seems to me that whether or not it's an insult would hinge entirely on the accuracy of the label.

It's kinda like when someone in front of you is driving really slow....the more you tailgate the slower they get. Its the one tailgating that is agrivated not the guy going the speed limit....yes its the speed limit, and you dont have to go over it. These are the laws of the road...They have every right to drive that way. If you don't like it then stay home!

This shows better than anything your own bigotry and prejudice. Perhaps you get too much of your knowledge from Hollywood ?  Oh, and books arent "red" by anyone, but they can be "red" in color.  Laughing

Resignation is at the discretion of the players. Some have resigned in won positions. One would think the time for resignation is especially ripe in losing positions in correspondence and slow email chess when there is no great technique or tactic required to win. Of course, a correspondence opponent may die and an online player may lose due to technological problems. Some players play every position out, especially if they are so weak that every game is terrible and they are simply in the best position they are capable of getting. Some play on because it takes longer to think on each move whether or not they should resign. The issue of the stronger side feeling insulted and of the losing side knowingly giving an insult is real, but I believe the winner should be stoic about it at the time. Choosing to not play an opponent in the future when the pairing is voluntary is fine. I was sort of apologized to by a GM, after I won an OTB game, by his saying he only played on because of the time, which I felt I had quite enough of (and was just a bit insulted considering he judged that I was not overrated at around 2400). An IM lost to me, also OTB, after playing on 25 moves after losing a piece and getting down to a bare king. He said nothing, but at least he played quickly. On the other hand, I have not won every game in which my opponent "should have resigned." Every time such games are not won, the opponents who survive or even win are reinforced in their hesitancy to resign.
