Yes, there are many great ways to improve your game and become a better player:

1) Play slow games against stronger human opponents and then ask them to help you review the game when it is over. I always try to play at least one 90/5 (90 minutes, 5 second delay) game each day and then go over it with my opponent. Hopefully many of your opponents will be gracious enough to help you review your mistakes and learn from them. By the way, chess.com will be adding a live playing service for the members so be on the look out for that.

2) Read Dan Heisman's "Novice Nook" monthly column. You can go to  http://www.chesscafe.com/archives/archives.htm#Novice%20Nook to read all of these wonderful and instructional articles. I know that these articles have really helped me improve my play and my chess ability and I really suggest that all others looking to improve should read these articles.

3) Practice chess tactics every day! Most games under the 2000 level will come down to whichever player will see the chess tactics better. A great way to study chess tactics is to use the Chess Tactics Server. Every day I will go to this site and try to do at least 50 problems each day. I really have noticed that this has made a big difference in my play. As I have been using this tool each day to better my tactical vision I really have noticed the results in my play.

I feel that if you do these three things then you can really take your chess to the next level! Good luck with your chess!

Always take your time study the whole board. the worst thing you can do even if your experinced is to rush through the game. Also always play more deffense then offense or else your going to find out that you run out strong peices fast. I hope this helped you and if not then your better at chess then me or somthing

Great advice from MattHelfst, I think. Lots of slow games, practice tactics and read all of Heisman's articles and you'll make great strides forward.

I highly recommend a premium membership here, so you can use Chess Mentor as well.  That coupled with unlimited Tactics Trainer should improve you significantly!

Well done, G-Money, you managed to dig up a thread that's over two years old... that's really helpful.

You can tell the thread is old, because there is the promise of Live Chess coming soon! Wink And there is still the hint of naivety, where Patzer24 seems to think it will be pulled off without a hitch! Two years later and we have constant apologies and a promise of a complete revamp any day now! Laughing

In less than 4 weeks, Live should be great!  The new server will improve upon the already-best chess site in the world, mind you, Nytik!  Smile
