Hi I am in my first game on chess.com and I have a query. Can a pinned piece give check? The analysis board won't allow my opponents king to take my queen when i move it adjacent to it as my knight is covering the square i am moving my queen to. BUT my knight is absolutely pinned by my opponents rook. I would have thought that the king could take my queen as my knight can't leave my king exposed to check.
Can anyone advise?
Yes - a pinned piece can give check.
Your king dies first. That's all that counts in chess
Thanks very much! Feels like cheating tho
or maybe it's not! got two different answers there! are you both 100% sure? :0)
Its behavior sounds correct. For example, in this position 1.Qf7# is mate even though the queen is supported by knight which is absolutely pinned by the rook.
Thanks again. I never knew that - seems odd though, sort of chicken and egg situation.
In this diagram, the black king cannot stroll over to e8. Even though the white queen couldn't take the black king because it is pinned by the black rook...the black king would still be walking into check.
from what i understand, yes i pinned piece is pinned however, the king must not be in check and may not enter into check for any reason. it is that simple
That's exactly the situation. My problem now is do I make the move that I only knew about because of the my use of the analysis board i.e. not a true reflection of my chess ability or do I make the move that is OK but nowhere near as effective and be able to look at myself in the mirror? Sigh.
I would make the best move I could... using an analysis board is allowed although outside help is not! But if making some other move makes you feel better about youself... well, that's much more important than winning a game of chess. :)
I made the move I knew about. I'm probably not going to get very far victory-wise :0)
the analysis board is there to use..why would you feel bad about using it?
I guess it's because if I'd met the other player face to face on a real board it would never have crossed my mind to play that move because i didn't know it was legal. It was only because i was messing around with the analysis board and happened to try and take my queen with his king that i discovered that it couldn't be done. misplace sense of honour perhaps?
ah man it's fine you shoulda done it
Hey all, I'm the "other player" in this scenario. Just thought you would want to know that:
Congratualtions, Olorin!
