Okay, so I've been pondering this from the first time I saw it. Why sacrifice the exchange? For those who don't know, sacrificing the exchange means giving a rook for a knight or bishop. I'm not talking about sacing it for attacking purposes, but for position. I've seen it a lot in master games. I know it depends on the position, but what is the general view on doing this? Is the exchange and a pawn enough compenastion?
This is a good question.
