Hi,

I've recently downloaded SCID, and I've got to be honest, I've been wrestling with it ever since. I've downloaded a free database of over 1,000,000 game, the spellchecker and the opening repertoires (the latter 2 from the SCID website), and I'm struggling to get anything going.

Firstly, the only way I can access the game data base is to select the database file, and not load it directly through the "open" category on the interface.

Secondly, the spellchecker, and opening files just don't load.

I've tried following the help on the website, but I'm fully stuck. Clearly this is a problem with me, as other people use this tool successfully, so I'm just wondering if someone could offer some advice?!?

Thanks

Russell

I'm still a beginner at SCID but I'm learning. I open a database by choosing Open from the File menu. You can browse to the database file. I believe the default location for the SCID databases is c:\program files\scid\bin\bases but you can browse to files in other locations.

The spellchecker file that you download must go in the c:\program files\scid\bin directory. You might have to unzip it, I don't remember. The next time you run SCID the spellchecker should load. You use it by selecting one of the spellcheck options from the File\Maintenance\Name Spelling\... menu.

I don't remember how I got the opening books working. That file might have to be unzipped to the ...\bin\books folder.

A SCID group was recently created so SCID users could help each other. Hopefully this link will take you there: http://www.chess.com/groups/home/scid-users
