Personally, I don't mind waiting for a victory that I deserve, but it's just common decency to resign when you know your game is lost. I don't mind even if the guy wishes to stubbornly battle on until the last pawn, but I find petty and immature when players who are losing just log-off, or leave the game to tick down while they start a new game. Frankly, I believe it is these simple qualities that eventually separate real chess players from amateurs. I may be wrong, but I hardly imagine great players like Kasparov going in a sulk when his game is lost. I'm sure he would give his opponent a curt hand shake and then walk away from the table. Ultimately, I just find it plain funny to think of a grown man so upset over a game that he has to leave you waiting for your victory as a "one last stab" at you before it's all over. Chess is a great game, and brings all sorts; it brings out the cheats; it brings out the sore losers; but most importantly, and on a more positive note, it brings out the greatness of the human mind in it's never ending ability to create, invent, plan! So to all you sore losers out there, try to put a little more effort into playing... no wait, try to put a little more effort into character building before you attempt a demanding game like chess!

Those guys are like big sore loser babies. I know some who play OTB who have temper tantrums when losing. I can easily see them waiting on line as one last ditch clock gambit to see if you forfeit. You can report them if you like. But it is unfortunate that you got one of these clowns.

Looks like the final straw was that he knew his knight was lost.  But how do you get to a 1400 level by bringing out your queen before developing minor pieces, and then leaving it en prise?  That's 1000 level stuff.

It may be my imagination, but I don't think many grown men do these sorts of antics.  You were probably playing a kid.

I think I meant to say <1000 level rated stuff.  Even at 1000, I'm sure there are some players which occasionally overlook threats on their queen.  But it shouldn't be something someone at the 1400 level ever does.

I remember once a sore loser on the FICS or ICC (don't remember which) stopped moving his pieces and said "now.... you WAIT to win!"

I gave him another ten minutes on the clock and said "No, *you* wait to *lose*."

He forfeited by disconnection :P

Ray_Malcolm I fully endorse your comments concerning sore losers.Speaking personally,I am not particularly good at chess but I will battle to the bitter end of a match for the pure experience of attempting to extricate myself from a God awful situation.This approach will eventually reap rewards but to give in is not only cowardly, it is ungentlemanly behaviour.

Oh yeah!The good ole reverse psychology strategy is usually enough to provoke the move. lol. (Then they can't seem to move fast enough. Except the funny part is, they'll wait a good five minutes first just to make sure you've had time to get in the shower.)
