Well wouldn't you like to know how you are doing against a higher rated player?

I usually try to unsettle a higher-rated player by asking them how they're doing! Mind you, I try the same tactic with lower- and equally-rated players - with the same degree of success i.e. none at all.

Yep, many players don't like to discuss the actualities of a position during the game, but will have little or no problem giving you a pointer or two after the game.

Hello Frank,

My rating is not much higher than yours (I was a little bit lucky to win some games against a higher rated opponent than me with surpassing the time ), but honestly it is clear that you are improving your chess playing, some months ago , from the ten games ( I don't know by heart ) I could win perhaps 6 and lose 4 with you, but it 's obviously becoming the other way round ! I can feel you are a driver through, and I'm sure, that this will be paid on the long term ! So, please ignore that stupid answer, and go on like you are busy, I know your mind is stronger than to let you infuence by such stupidity !! This is also the reason I like to play with you (my time to improve is over, I'm to old now !)

Friendly greetings,

Herman

my advice would be to not chat during a rated game, unless your opponent starts chatting first, like the others say, many people like to play serious, and OTB you wouldnt strike up a converation until AFTER the game :-)

My only proviso to gumpty's advice is: say SOMETHING non-commital - otherwise you could both be waiting for the other person to 'make the first move'.

u shuldnt need encouraging words from your opponent to help you. If that IS the case, you will find most opponents WONT encourage you (to better their chances of winning) and with chess, its all about winning, isn't it?

I tend to acknowledge my opponent's strikingly good moves with a "good move" comment. Is this a 'good move' on my part?  http://www.chess.com/forum/view/community/is-this-a-good-move

Exactly.

Talking about the game while it's still in progress will probably draw a negative reaction from many people. Ask them after the game.

To me chess is not all about the winning it is about a game that makes you think. Also to make new friends.

I recently won a game from a player rated 400 + higher then me . He never said a word ,during or after the game , probably not happy with his loss. Another time I won from a high ranked ,I was told that I played unusual moves and srcewed up the game ,and because of my "stupid" play he lost .

Not necessarily. It sounds like that high-ranked player is too used to playing textbook moves. I think he's blaming bart225 for leaving the book lines, where that player is apparently less comfortable.
