thats like a contradiction

Not necessarily. It sounds like that high-ranked player is too used to playing textbook moves. I think he's blaming bart225 for leaving the book lines, where that player is apparently less comfortable.

that is why its bad to be a book player

Well i have learned that is why higher rated players do not play lower rated players is because they are use to people making better moves than we do so there for they do not see the moves us novices make.

Well, I agree with that. That wasn't very nice of him. He could have just said, "you're doing very well" or something to that effect.

But, as a general point, I'd still say that lots of people don't want to talk about the game until it's over. Personally, I have no problem with that either.

To ask your opponent how you are doing, whether you are losing or winning, is in poor taste..it's even poorer when youre winning. WHY, you ask? Well, I'll tell ya.

First off, the average player ASSUMES that  their opponent at least knows how to play chess. IN EVERY CHESS BOOK, on page one, it lists the value of the pieces: Queen=9, Rook=5, Bishop and Horsey=3, Pawn=1. So, even a complete NOVICE would know they are ahead based on material.

Secondly, unless it is expressely agreed on in the beginning that this is an unrated game to be used as a learning experience, then it is in poor taste to talk.

Third, it is considered RUDE to talk during a rated game. It is forbidden to distract or annoy your opponent in any manner whatsoever during competition. Some people take it VERY seriously if they are playing a rated game...RESPECT THAT.

Fourth, 99.999% people, if they were getting beat, would view it as a SLAP IN THE FACE if their opponent asked how they themself were doing. I WOULD. And then I would be relentless in my revenge.

Of course, I DO NOT practice what I preach. I offer draw after draw or undo after undo if time is running short on my end. If I don't like you, I may ask you to resign every 10 seconds. I may trash talk a worthy opponent in the hopes that I may distract his train of thought. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Bottom line is, talking about the game you are playing is POOR ETIQUETTE.

Well first i ask only high rated players i do not ask people who are on par with me or below me  i do agree that is rude. You tell me to respect something you do not what makes you think you can say that.

Sportsmanship doesn`t exist on here so don`t worry about it. Most of the players use software to help them anyway. With the exception of the Titled players and one or two others most of the so called chess players wouldn`t have a clue if you faced them across a board. If you can`t stand to lose don`t play. I generally say hello at the begining of a game and after a few moves I disconnect the chat box. The last thing I need is some smalltalk about the weather in Outer Mongolia or questions about how old I am or what colour my hair is? Small mindedness and rude behaviour ruins this site. Fact of life though.

If you can get the opening right (and here are some tips - "Good Luck") the rest of game will be on a sounder footing.

This comment shows an absolute underestimation for most of people playing here, even a lack of respect by despising their playing and conversation.I love talking to people and I never use a software to play chess,I enjoy so much playing chess than I love even my blunders,so that general critique seems really mediocre to me.Indeed it's just a game!

i resent this remark. i think if you go to my profile you will find a link to my OTB rating, which just so happens to be HIGHER than my online one, how do you explain this?

My opponents constantly make stupid moves that make me lose. Tongue out
