As we all know chess players are a group of people that are certainly stereotyped as much as many other groups. Today , I had one such stereotype strongly reinforced ! I have been playing tournament chess for more than 3 decades and have yet to meet a chess player that likes/prefers playing serious chess in the mornings ! Today I was scheduled to play for my team and the round was scheduled to start at 10 am !! It was a "home" game for my team so the venue was our chess club. My wife and I arrived early to the club to set up the clocks and sets, lay out the score sheets and fill out necessary forms etc. ( my wife is team captain ) At 10 am 7 of the 8 players were there with the late one being one of my own team members who is always late 15 to 30 minutes! The captain for the opposing team suggested a draw on all 4 boards as thats what his players wanted... none of them wanted to play ! We didnt want to play either but we had a player not yet there and he might want to play, which would mean we would all have to play ! So, a call was made to him and he was on the train en route to the match. He was told of the offer and that so far all were in agreement with 4 draws being agreed and he also agreed ! So, the official result is 2-2 with all 4 games drawn ! Not a single move was played and the clocks werent even started! Now, I am even more convinced that chess players are not morning people and they do not like to play serious chess in the mornings !  What about you ?  Cool

I don't think this affects me in normal chess but on chess.com I ended my last losing streak by no longer playing at 7 am.

I can enjoy a game at any time but I find I'm not quite myself until afternoon at least.

I think early morning is the most glorious time of day; for relaxing not chess.

I'm OK in the morning as long as I have the requisite amount of caffeine.

I think it was a Ray Charles interview on 60 Minutes several years ago, he said he didn't like to be woken up--one exception being to play some chess.

i usually play a quiet defensive game in the morning and usually lose because i am not completely awake. i wake up after i lose, and i start winning. it works!

Now, I know how to beat you.  Kings at 7am.  That might level the playing field.  Laughing

The only time I like playing in the morning is if I've been up playing all night.  It's dangerous for me to even think about moving a piece without copious amounts of caffeine in the bloodstream no matter when I play....

Roy

P.S.

I'm jealous that your wife is a chess player!

I'm afraid I sometimes play when the sun rises.

I mean, I'm truly afraid.  I never start before 10 pm.

I've always tried to be open minded but in later life I've found stereotypes tend (in general) to have some truth to them.

Same here. Yesterday (Sunday) I was playing against my computer before 8:00 AM. It was a slow start but after a couple cups of coffee I was ready for the middle game. I've learned that my brain usually works best around 9:00 or 10:00 in the morning.

I have learned the hard way not to allow myself to even look at my games first thing in the morning, for fear I will make some idiot move (as I have done) before the coffee kicks in.
