Play as much as you can, and always look for unprotected pieces - yours and your opponents.
CJ ~ Fezzik's remark about activating the King was in context of the endgame.
Chess the Easy Way by Rueben Fine is old, but excellent for starting out.
Good tips all--thank you. You clearly are good players---only those who love the game/sport/whatever, become interested teachers.
Whoa, that weird message happened again...
I say play as much as possible.
I'd recommend easy tactics puzzles. You need to learn to see what attacks what and how combinations work. Get into tactics trainer. You'll lose a bunch of them until your rating balances out and then you will start to get some right... keep at it until you can recognise where the threats are, spot hanging pieces and quick mates.
Once your tactical skills improve, then start looking at openings and various strategies.
Play a lot of games -- slower and/or untimed or CC games rather than blitz IMO.
Beginner level "how to from A to Z" type chess books should be helpful to you. You don't need to focus on any specific part of chess, rather you need to get basic fundamental chess ideas in every phase.
Work on developing the habit of looking at possible good moves your opponent will have! Develop the habit of thinking as hard about your opponent's next move as you do about the move you have to make now.
Studying common tactical patterns and mating patterns can be very helpful.
