Do you think you can be successful in playing chess (i.e. winning) without doing countless hours of studying openings, middle game strategies, and endings?  As a new player, you generally want some type of instant gratification (i.e. winning), and I find that hard to come by when you really don't know the in's and out's of good offensive and defensive strategies to the game.  Can a new player achieve that instant gratification before spending months of reading?

You'll certainly be at a disadvantage when playing someone who has put in that time studying and/or playing extensively, but everyone makes a mistake sooner or later -- you might get lucky.
