Tactics Search Software

I understand chesstempo.com, and probably many others, generate their problems by using an engine to pour through game databases and locate positions where a tactic exists. Does anyone know a way to do something like this with readily available software?

Not very keen on engine software but I know you can have Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition check for mate in any give position.

Yes, but only one position at a time. I want to be able to go through lists of games without having to be tended to so I assume some sort of database software like Scid of ChessBase. I've never really used database software so I don't know if there is anything that can perform the kind of search I'm thinking of.

What do you want it for?

I'm just wondering how hard it would be for a programmer to do. I guess it doesn't really matter what you want it for in that respect but I'm still curious.

You would need an engine written specifically to notify on finding a tactic. Most engines just follow the strongest continuation, whether or not there is a tactic in the position. You would also need to check that the tactic leads to a somewhat better position, as otherwise there would be no point in studying the tactic.

tl;dr - I doubt you would be able to do it with any software available to a non-business, or without having one written especially.

I figured someone would ask. I have a web site that has been neglected a little too long and would like to add something like a tactic of the week feature on the main page. Ideally I'd like to be able to generate original puzzles myself.
