There are a few different types of 'learning chess.'  I'd start by explaining the rules and piece movement.  You may want to establish basic opening principles with her at this early stage.  If she continues to be interested in the game after learning the basics and playing many, many games,  I'd say go to books.  The Winning Chess series, by Yasser Seirawan is a wonderful tool that can quickly move players past the point of hopeless beginner.  They're also very easy to get through because of the flow of the writing style.  You may even find parts of the books useful.  If you don't want to go the traditional route.  There are plenty of online tools and downloads.  Have you looked at the 'downloads' section here on chess.com?

Ask her if she wants to learn first. If it is an enthusiastic then sit her down and play a game with her. Move her pieces, with your hand on hers and let her get the feel of the game. Talk about basics: space, attack, colors, position. Her mind will absorb it faster than you can teach it. Find out if her school has a chess club. Get her an account her on chess.com.

Remember all the prodigies started very early.
