I have been consulted by our MAPEH Supervisor in Caloocan City about what could we teach the Elementary Grade 3 about chess because of the move to incorporate it as a PE subject in the curriculum of our Elementary Education,MAPEH stands for Music,Arts,Physical Education and Health. He said not that the level of training that we train our athlete but more of the basic Chess, it's history and evolution. To teach elementary grade teachers about it and in so doing i present my "Chess for Dep-Ed"...ChessTrainor.I would ask members here not to comment until i have presented the whole topic.

"The man without history is like a man without memory".This topic of chess, defines chess and how it evolved and synchronized with it are the games of those great players and personalities who in their own style in that period etched or marked chess as it is now!

Evolution of Chess

Sometimes called " Modern Chess" or "International Chess" to distinguish it from its predecessors,"Chaturanga and Shatranj",of Indian and Persian origin. The current form of the game emerged in the Southern Europe(Italy and Spain) during the second half  of the 15th century - about the year 1485 when important changes were made in the rules. For a hundred years before this date the game remain unchanged ,the moves of pieces fixed.Although highly popular,it was still a dull game by our standards. The modern chessplayer would regard the chess of the middle ages as a strange and wearisome pastime.

In many respects ,of course the medieval game was similar to the chess we play today. The position of the pieces were the same ,the rooks, knights and pawns moved as they move today.Castling had not yet been developed, but the King was allowed to" leap" two squares on the first move.

The main difference lay in the moves of the Queen and the bishop. The Queen was permitted to move only to an adjacent diagonal square,it moves like our bishop, but only one square at a time.Instead of being the most powerful piece on the board ,it was the weakest. The bishop of the medieval game leaped over the adjacent diagonal square to the square beyond the diagonal.

When the moves of the Queen and the bishop were changed to those we play today. The entire character of the game was transformed. The old artillery, cavalry and infantry in the form of rooks, knights and pawns were still in the game, but the devastating power of the new live-bombing Queen and the speedy attack of the motorized bishop made it necessary for the Chess Generals to develop new strategy and tactics.New and scientific openings had to be examined and analysed.Pawn play became a primary consideration now that a promoted pawn could become a powerful Queen. The whole tempo of the game was quickened, the battle shortened and intensified.

Evolution of Chess

Italy was the main center of chess activity when these changes took place and the new game originated there.By 1510, the old type of chess was obselete in most Italy and Spain.

A bit of history tells us that in the A.D. 900's the Moors,a moslem people built a fortress called Magerit on the site which is now Madrid,Spanish Christians under King Alfonso VI of Leon and Castile, gained the control of the area in 1083.The Moslems may have been defeated but they have introduced to Spain, particularly in Madrid the game of chess.Madrid remained a small unimportant town until 1561,when Philip II made it the capital of Spain .King Philip who ruled a huge colonial empire my country the Philippines included. It is also from Spain's ruler our country derives its name.King Philip chose Madrid primarily of its central location. That direct influence from Spain our country got hold of the game of chess.Chess is " Ajedrez "in Spanish.

Evolution of Chess

The late 15th century was the time when chess started to develop a corpus of theory. The oldest preserved printed chessbook," Repeticion de amores y Arte de Ajedrez "( Repetition of love and the art of playing Chess) by Spanish Churchman Luis Ramirez de Lucena was published in Salamanca in 1497.Lucena and later masters like Portuguese Pedro Damiano,Italians Giovanni Leonado Di Bona,Giulio Cesare Polerio and Gioachino Greco or Bishop Ruy Lopez de Segura develop elements of openings and started to anayze simple endgames.

Evolution of Chess

One of the earliest games of the new chess to be recorded appears in the late15th century manuscript which a poem describes the courtship of Venus by Mars  by means of a game of Chess.Franscisco de Castellvi takes the part of Mars,Narciso Vinoles that of Venus.During those times, actors are all men no female actresses then.<Game Insert>

This one is the earliest recorded game of the Modern Chess,Center Counter Game,

(For purposes that is of historical value, the earliest game recorded will be presented in Descriptive Notation the way how old chess was written then.)

Historically important ,the game was undoubtedly played over the board by actual chessplayers of reasonable proficiency for the period.

Analysis was the ruling motive in the literature of the period.Opening today as the Ruy Lopez,Giuco Piano,Petroff Defense,Philidor Defense,King's Bishops' Opening and the Queen's Gambit Accepted were first outlined in the late 15th century manuscript in the Gottingen University Library.

Evolution of Chess

The first " Best Seller" was a book written by Damiano and printed in Rome in 1512.Eight editions were published in the 16th century and it was translated  and published in French,English and German. All that is known of the author is that he was an apothecary(pharmacist) and a native of Portugal. To judge from his analysis he was also a mediocre chessplayer.

 Evolution of Chess

The famous name of Ruy Lopez De Segura first appears in 1559 when the Spanish priest visited Italy and defeated all Roman players.Although he did not invent the opening which bears his name Ruy Lopez was the leading player of Spain for over 20 years and noted for his skill at blindfold chess. He played often at the court of his patron,King Philip II of Spain. In 1561,Lopez published a book on chess containing a code of laws, general advice to players("including the suggestion that you place your opponent with the sun in his eyes"),and a miscellanous collection of openings. He deals with a wider range of openings than his predecessors but his analysis is considered weak.Interesting is the fact that the book gave international currency to the term " gambit" a slang term which Lopez had learned in Italy.According to Lopez " it is derived from the Italian word; "gamba" , a leg and gambitare means to set traps ,from which ,a gambit game means  a game of traps and snares.

 Evolution of Chess

Among the leading Italian players of the period 1560 to 1630 were Pablo Boi,Giovanni Leonardo Da Cutri,Giulio Cesare Polerio and Gioachino Greco. As a youth ,Leonardo had been trounced by Ruy Lopez in Rome but he had his revenged in 1575 when he visited and defeated the aging Lopez in a match held in the presence of King Philip II.

Although existing text-books had become obselete, the strong players of the early part of this period did not publish their findings. The high stakes for which they played made them secretive. However,a patron could always obtain a copy of the players notes on Openings for consideration and many of these manuscripts have survived, particularly those of Polerio.

The manuscripts of Polerio, considered the leading player of Rome in 1606,again widen the range of the openings and included the Queen's Gambit(by 2....c6 only) The Fianchetto Defenses, the Caro-Kann,The Sicilian Defense and most of the known variations of the King's Gambit,The Center Gambit,The Greco Counter Gambit,The Two Knights Defense and the Four Knights Game. There are also some printed books from the period, including three works published by Dr Alessandro Salvio, one of the leading Neapolitan players for his time,Salvio was an analyst of great ability.

Chess does not help to be a good wide receiver in foot-ball, nor a good runner, nor to be a good basket ball player, nor a good base ball player.
