So the other night I went out to dinner with my roommate, his girlfriend and her friend (lets call her Y) . Before the food came we were talking about this and that when his girlfriend (we'll call her X) brought up the idea that women can multitask better than men can. Now this is something I've heard before but I've never seen a source, or heard any of the biology behind it. Considering all of the female/male chess ability threads in this forum my interest was somewhat piqued.
Now to clear some things up lets define multitasking. Watching a film while writing a piece of music would be multi tasking. Assuming you were trying to write the music as well as you possibly could, and retain as much of the information from the movie as you were able do you believe you could do both at once?
So anyways the conversation went as follows;
X: Yeh women are better at multi tasking but guys are better at focusing on one thing.
Me: I've heard that, but I'm not sure I believe it.
X: No, it's true, men have more linear brains and women's brains can branch out more. Men can only focus on one thing for the most part, but women can focus on a lot, I'm not saying you're brain is worse, that's just how it is.
Me: Okay, but there would have to be a reason for that, and since I've never read this anywhere credible, or seen it validated I'm still pretty skeptical.
Y: Well there are other differences too like men have more rational brains while women have mo...
Me: *interrupting* I don't really believe that either.
Y: Okay well it would have to have evolutionary reasons, like men were hunter gatherers and women were nurturers so...?
Me: Uh huh... but why does that necessarily equate to men being more logical and women being able to branch out more efficiently?
X: Well it makes sense because when you're taking care of a baby with one hand and cooking a meal with the other, while you talk on the phone you need to be able to multi task.
Me: *annoyed at this point* That has more to do with your manual dexterity than anything else.
So basically the gist of this is that everyone at the table was completely ignorant as to why this would be, but three of four people believed it . Now wikipedia is telling me that the question is still in the air, which leads me to believe that there's no legitimate difference between the male and female brain, at least not in this capacity. I realise that absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, but I also think that if there was a significant difference here it would have been discovered; the idea is certainly not unknown.
The idea that men are the more logical sex also seems to be completely unfounded.
So this thread is for the science of the male and female brain. I'm rather uneducated on the topic so firstly are there any concrete differences which have been observed repeatedly? How would these differences, if they exist relate to chess?
(cue hate for X and Y)
How do they know that men did the hunting?
Nah they're not bad, they were just rationalizing something they thought was common knowledge, but they didn't actually know anything about. I've done that before.
I'm pretty sure that women are not as intelligent as men because they think that the first move doesn't give white a decisive advantage and they also claim that Fischer is better than Kasparov.
Ok, now let's see this thread THRIVE.
When she started throwing-up all her 'ideas' about "that's just how it is", you showed the ability of multi-tasking in a profound way. You were able to control the logical mind you were condemned with, and not tell her conversation requires more than opening your mouth and vomiting. While at the same time you focused on diplomacy over hysterical laughter. There is a point though, where uncontrollable crying should have manifested on your part, but your brain was not quite ready for multi-multi-tasking. You will need regular hormone shots for this.
I just think that human minds do not work differently due to gender, I think the way the individual is treated and socially conditioned and taught to behave can be different.
sorry to break this new here I read or heard somewhere recently saying now that multitasking is not a good thing to do.
At any time did someone bring out an egg dish and say "Who wants dairy"?
Because that would be some sweet irony how you traveled so far to just come full circle.
oh no not that ! (are you referring to someone who quit a dairy job lol !)
"There is a point though, where uncontrollable crying should have manifested on your part, but your brain was not quite ready for multi-multi-tasking. You will need regular hormone shots for this."
Ivandh likes this.
When you see Ivandh again, could you tell him thank you
I find it amusing that you chose y for the man and x for the woman. This, of course, being the difference in chromosome that causes a male or a female. I joke with my 23 year old daughter that the y chromosome is a birth defect which produces certain a amount of challenge, especially when it comes to vehicles and women. Both of which men always want one that is different from the one they have.
In the story I think x and y were both chicks actually

Just that one of them had short hair, tattoos and a gruff voice.
"(lets call her Y)"
I thought it was men who didn't listen carefully...
Yeah, you can tell because they were being totally irrational and illogical about the whole thing.
I do tend to make these threads. >.>
That said bros my room mate agreed with them (I just felt that the conversation part was long enough) and he's a guy.
Of course he agreed with them, one of them is his girlfriend.
