Ok I was just wondering if anyone here can answer this question... I know there's already a lot of discussion concerning the rating system here on the site, but I have a very specific question and I don't have time to start going through all those posts looking for the answer, if it's even there.

Anyway, my question is very simple... Like everyone else, when I first joined the site I got a rating of 1200, and was paired up with another player of exact rating for my first game (which I won). After winning my rating increased by 134 points, from playing (supposedly) a similar rated opponent. After that I had lost the next 2-3 games to stronger rated opponents (around 1400) and my rating decreased below 1200.

Ok, her's the part I'm confused about... currently I'm running a few games with opponents who are rated around the 1400 (my rating is currently back up to 1205). When I calculate the rating adjustment it tells me that if I win I will only get 70-80 more points, playing against an opponent who is much higher rated than me (1204 vs. 1400+)... where as in the beginning I got +134 points from beating an opponent with *similar* rating (1200 vs. 1200)! So how come now even if I beat an opponent with a higher rating than mine, I actually get *less* points for it than I did when beating a player that's rated the same as me?!

Hope someone can clear this up for me...

Thanks!

Thanks lostapiece! That sheds some light on it...

The Glicko system uses a RD value (Rating Distrubution), when you first start your RD is large (I think 350) then as you play more games it drops so the variance in your rating settles down.

yeah, just keep playing, and as you keep playing, your rating will be more accurate.
