I tried to join a tornament and I got a message that my time out is too high and should be 10%

Can anyone please explain to me what that means?

Thanks

You've timed out (lost by not moving) in 5/31 = 16% of your games. Timeouts are frowned upon. To be eligible to play in tournaments, don't timeout in your next 17 games.

But i have lost lots of games on here due to running out of time because of really bad lag on the site. Why is this frowned upon as you say if its not the players fault, but the servers?

To above:

Lag isn't always the servers. Lots of times it is the browser or your isp. I for one have never experienced lag except on puzzles and shown games.(And this is caused by the slowness of JavaScript on Safari)

Or if you are talking about Live Chess, those are just bugs. It is very well known that Live Chess is very buggy. That is why they will reset your scores after the beta period is over.

Edit: I could be wrong, but don't they pause your games when they take the site down for maintenance?

no way! if the servers are ever down for more than 30 minutes we always add time to everyone's clock. :)

I use this site almost every day and I only recall experiencing lag maybe 2-3 days this year--most of the time it's blazing fast. If you are experiencing lag regularly, it's probably due to: (1) your computer system, (2) your ISP (access link speed, backbone connection speed, QoS policies, routing policies, etc), (3) how close the chess.com servers are to your location. chess.com has servers in the UK now so that third factor shouldn't be an issue.

sorry, i misunderstood this thread, i was talking about lagging out of live chess games. blitz etc. this has happened a lot of times. I only use this site from work on nights, and as such have to go through a firewall and whether or not this is the problem i don't know, but i get between 1 and 10! seconds lag approx per move and at the start of each game the board takes approx 30 seconds to load. the pc i have to use at work is about a 3 gig processor so i don't think that is the prob, and as far i am aware our broadband is fast as it supplies about 200 pcs in daytime, but at night there is only me using the network? any advice gratefully received.
