Study tactics, opening theory, and always double-check your calculations.

Start playing some games with 12xx player to determine your rating, and persue the articles section (I think there are some specifically for beginners) in between moves.

    Oh, and have fun.

    Dont worry about ratings.

Get involved in the forums; there is good advice out there, but make sure to listen to experienced players.

Enjoy the game and play as often as you can.

Buy a book or two after you feel you cannot learn anymore by yourself, then slowly build up a library of books.

Dont worry to much about analysis engines at the moment.

Try to beat other beginners before challanging stronger players, this will build your confidence. More importantly, when you beat off enough beginners challange someone a little better and gauge if you have moved up a category or not.
