Chess is a sport as even Facebook agrees with it and you can add Bobby Fisher as one of your favourite athletes(And Don't comment "let the trolls come in" Please let's keep this sensible)

I'm glad that a time has come at last when all human knowledge has been standardized and ratified, all in one convenient place. I can burn my books, forget everything I've learnt and dispense with reasoning because a modern day Oracle has come to pass. Lucky are we that have access to Facebook.

I think it's only a sport depending on the time controls. There is definetly going to be fatigue if you're playing at a 2hr tourament over a weekend but some 5 minute game isn't really going to tire anyone.

Well a five minute game will tire someone out mentally perhaps...
Anyway, the only reason I think some people don't think chess is a sport, is because there arent any physical fights in it.

Chess today is a recognized sport of the International Olympic Committee. The first official World Chess Champion, Wilhelm Steinitz, claimed his title in 1886; the current World Champion is Viswanathan Anand.

Yes. The IOC approves and look at curling! Is curling very physical? No, it's a skill game that uses the mind, just like chess. It has been said that curling is "chess on ice". Chess is a sport despite the many whom like to think otherwise. ;)

Relies on the connotation of sport as a ball game to lead the reader into drawing his own conclusion... not much of a logical argument.  You could say that because computers "play" chess, that they do play at least one sport.  So you see it merely goes back to the subjective definition.

I enjoyed prawns and fezzik's posts.

I have no problem with you considering chess to be a sport. I don't consider it to be a sport, and I trust you don't have a problem with that.

And for the record I still don't understand the idea behind arguing for or against the status of chess as a sport.  Would the title of "sport" elevate this great game?  IMO no.  If "sport" is subjective then why does it matter?  I don't know.

I wonder if facebook has done more harm or good?

    I'd bet on the former.

Obviously this all hinges on the definition of "sport".  Once we can agree on this definition, then we will also agree on whether or not chess qualifies.  The Face Book definition, even if implied only, is but one, and Webster's but another.  We cannot argue about it as if it were some objective and verifiable fact; rather, it is subjective.  But by my definition, chess is not a sport, for the reasons mentioned above, and also because unlike other (real) sports, playing chess does not train one to play other sports.  Though there are exceptions, for the most part playing and training for one sport will help you in other sports too.  For example, playing and training for football will help you in basketball too, since both sports require speed, power, agility, and leaping ability.  It is these characteristics that define "sport" for me.  As such, chess does not qualify.

I can only guess that you've never curled. Spend a couple of hours on the brooms and tell me it's not physical.
