To span the time from Lasker to Anand, my list of ten best players contain 12 players. They all deserve to be in any list of best chess platers. Here is my list: 1 - Emanuel Lasker, 2 - Akiba Rubinstein, 3 - Jose Raul Capablanca, 4 - Alexander Alekhine, 5 - Mikhail Botvinik, 6 - Tigran Petrosian, 7 - Boris Spassky, 8 - Mikhail Tal, 9 - Robert Fischer, 10 - Anatoli Karpov, 11 - Garry Kasparov, 12 - Viswanathan Anand. Only Rubinstein and Tal were not World champions, but they certeinly could have been.
Kasparov 12th?!
Atos
Of course Tal was a world champion, although for a short time. Rubinstein was, I believe, scheduled to play a match with Lasker but the outbreak of WW I prevented it.
