How much does it usually cost for you to get into an OTB tourney? In my area I think it's quite expensive (20-40 dollars).

It is the same in Denmark last tournament I payed 30.94 dollars.
it may sound expensive but compared to other activities such as golf or other sports activities where you have to buy outfit and so on, chess is not that expensive. 30.94 dollars is less than a blu ray movie a blu ray movie in Denmark cost 35.36$ . a big mac in Denmark cost 5.37 $ whereas a big-mac cost 4.20 in US if we compare burgernomics.

If you're fortunate enough to live near an active chess club, it could be quite reasonable to attend the occasional tournament $40-80 entry fee. But add hotel, food, gas or other travel expenses and it becomes a tad extravagant.
