Has anyone ever given or received a trophy that wasn't sincere?

I just made a terrible rook blunder in a game, throwing away a hard fought for victory and my opponent foisted a Lord of the Rook trophy on me, which I consider pretty low.

I have to admit though, one time I gave a real jerk a Second Place trophy accompanied by the line "Second comes right after first!" so maybe it's karma.

Was I a jerk though? Well, maybe I didn't blunder soon enough for his liking or he didn't approve of me rummaging through his linen closet in a search for Christmas presents that he had intended for his children.

The "trophy" that's a real kick in the face is "Fishy Play".

Quite a few can be used maliciously can't they?

A winner sending to a loser - Great student, You're funny, did you let me win?,

A loser sending to a winner - Fishy play, anything related to computers, lucky.

Oh yeah, I've definitely caused some hurt with a trophy or two, like that one time my little league football team won the county championship and I used the trophy I got to bash one of the opponents over the head with...

...Oh...you mean the chess.com trophies? Uh, no, nevermind. ;)

It would be funny if it was just a blitz game, but when it's an online game that has taken weeks to complete it seems a bit ungracious. But you guys probably think thats more funny!?!

But hey...

I have his credit card details now. I'm going to buy a Nintendo Wii.

Well, I have received one or two trophies that wasn't sincere because in the message box I think they cussed me out in a different language for beating them in a game. LOL I don't know about receiving a trophy that said; for example, "Connoisseur of the Queen" when the Queen wasn't involved in any major attacks, but instead, it was ALL the Knights doing.

I imagine it was probably just because they have a sarcastic sense of humor.  I wouldn't worry about it.

I suppose it depends on your sense of humour and also the context of the game. I like a bit of cheeky sarcasm, but also I don't tend to take chess.com games overly seriously. If my opponent in an OTB league match piped up with that, I'd probably be a bit miffed unless I knew him well already.

It was ungracious rude and mocking... you're obviously not married or you'd be used to being treated like that.SurprisedYellLaughing

The fundamental problem here is simple. As soon as the game ends the two players are separated into two categories -- the winner and loser. Once this happens, any interaction between the two can easily be hurtful. Either the winner is lording it over the loser, or the loser is trying to diminish the accomplishment of the winner.

There's also a simple solution. Never finish your games, ever. Do whatever it takes to keep the game going. Take the full extent of the time limit to make your moves, go on vacation if you have to. Whatever you do, don't let your games end. If you're still having trouble keeping your games going, maybe you're not playing long enough time controls. Do you know you can play games that are only one move every 14 days? What are you not waiting for?! Use this time control! Your games can easily last much longer than either you or your opponent will be interested in the game of chess.

Now that's addressing the root cause of a problem.

Alternatively you could try not to be so sensitive....

I don't know, Grobe, if I quit being so dern sensitive I'm going to have a really hard time coming up with stuff to complain about. Then how will I spend my time? Productively?? I don't like where this is going...

You can always complain about the lack of things to complain about.
