Unexpected benefit of Chess.com

    Hi all

    It just occured to me.

One real benefit of online chess is that you can laugh at people when they make a silly move, humiliating them and massaging your own ego at the same time!

Imagine if I tried that in a real face-to-face encounter? The other guy might be twice my size, with the ability to reach over and grab me by polo shirt and break my nose!

    Phew...

Crass sarcasm is not funny, and only by a stretch can be considered irony.  I could say "The holocaust was a good thing", and it would be wrong, but that wouldn't make it funny.

An example of irony for chess would be somebody asking "How can i attack in chess", and somebody responding "Whack your opponent across the face with a chess board".  A classic example of irony, with a differance between what is said and what is meant.

    'Crass sarcasm is not funny'.

I beg to differ. Entire careers have been built on crass sarcasm.

Wow, you people need to settle down and recognise a bit of a joke now and then!!

It's all about defending the rights of rude, ignorant little gits who wouldn't dare so much as smirk in a real over-the-board encounter around here. You must remember that.

My friend, you have been nothing but a gentleman!

I do meet a lot of good players, real politeness.

I'm just very saddened and disappointed that there a so many, who seem to think that just because they're down a piece of wire, think that they can be rude and make fools of themselves by showing such poor sporstmanship.

Like I said, in a real OTB encounter, they wouldn't dare, so why not be gracious and act right at all times?

Well I for one would act exactly the same way I do on here! Smile
