USATE!!! part 1

Awwww yeah! The most fun tourney of the year! I know I'm over 2 months late in posting about this but it's here now!

For those who don't know, the US Amateur Team East takes place in Parsippany, NJ every year where 300+ teams compete annually. Each team has 4 players who play in rating order against other teams (board 1 plays board 1, board 2 plays board 2, etc). The team that is "white" for the round has white on boards 1 and 3. The catch is that the average rating has to be under 2200. Somehow we got a team with an average rating of 2199.25! Our team name was All About That Mate (not so subtle parody there). Here was our lineup (I won't give other players' names for privacy reasons).

Me - 2368

Board 2 - 2259

Board 3 - 2181

Board 4 - 2063

I know at least 1 person out there whipped out their calculators and discovered that our avg rating was actually 2218! However, the only ratings that mattered were the monthly supplement ratings. Alright, on to round one!

  All About That Mate   Opponents
Board 1 2368 0.5 2061 0.5
Board 2 2259 1 1902 0
Board 3 2181 1 1901 0
Board 4 2063 1 1928 0
Avg 2218 3.5 1948 0.5

We played a team with an avg rating of 1948. Note that it appears they played out of rating order, but I posted the live ratings here, not the supplements. Boards 3 and 4 won smoothly but our board 2 was lost at one point. However, his opponent blundered and lost. Therefore, we clinched the match early with a 3-0 score. However, my game was the last one going in the match and I did not play great chess and ended up drawing. Oh well. 5 more to go.

Round two-

  All About That Mate   Opponents
Board 1 2368 0 2438 1
Board 2 2259 1 2142 0
Board 3 2181 1 2042 0
Board 4 2063 1 1965 0
Avg 2218 3 2147 1

We were black this round, and it was another pretty decent round for us. Again we had it clinched 3-0 and I was still playing. I played the famous IM Jay Bonin, the most active chess player in America. What happened in this game was not pretty.

Well, that was frustrating. Round 3-

  All About That Mate   Opponents
Board 1 2368 1 2310 0
Board 2 2259 0.5 2276 0.5
Board 3 2181 1 2238 0
Board 4 2063 0.5 1890 0.5
Avg 2218 3 2179 1

We were white against a team from Boston (I think their name was Deflate-Sack) and we had a pretty fortunate round. Board 2 looked to be worse but emerged from the tactical complications in a drawn position. Board 3 played a fantastic attacking game, and I didn't get to see the end of the board 4 game. Tongue Out If I had lost the game (As I probably should have) the match would have been tied.

This was a huge turning point for me. If I had lost, I would have been at 0.5/3 and would have been psychologically crushed. However, as it was, I had an opportunity to turn things around and have a decent tournament.

But did I? Did the rest of the team keep up their blistering pace? You'll just have to wait and see...in part 2!
