That trick works because both players played poorly. 2.Bc4 puts no pressure on Black's position and leaves him free to move as he chooses (as opposed to 2.Nf3, attacking the e-pawn), so Black should respond 2...Nf6, attacking White's e-pawn (and preventing Qh5). Moving the queen to h5 that early in the game is usually bad, and Black can easily take advantage of it here with 3...Qe7 -- for example 4.Nf3, d6 and Black follows up with Nf6, chasing the queen away with a gain of time. Playing for tricks is a bad idea; it is better to play to control the center.

I love this Trick! I win every game when they use it against me. It is easy to defeat as White insists on the Early Queen move. I usually play 2. ... Nc6, but if you didn't see 3. Qh5 coming, 3. ... Qe7 is definitely a good response. Then you gain the iniative with 4. ... Nf6!

People its not nice to call some other player a newb just because he wants to share a tactic for all the players that just started chess (well, the term newb can be used here because it's not insulting). For all the newbie players!

Nice mate but if you start on this path you have one shot.  With your Queen out that early you are going to be in a world of hurt if black defends against it.

Being a rather slow- learning  newb myself I'm often reduced to tactic of piece swapping to  take out paired knights for example. Justified to myself as reducing the number  of permutations I am ignorant of each by each exchange.

I've recently seen this in a book and thought it was a cute trick...

According to chess.com's game explorer there are 7 'master' games that go

1e4 e5 2Bc4 Bc5 3Qh5 g6 in six of the games white then played Qxe5 and in the other Qf3 and still won???!!!!

So looks like some really good players fell for this!!

im not calling him a noob, but if someone plays this against me i know they are probably weak, this relies on the player being very weak. not trying to rain on any parades - my bad.
