I'm playing someone who has been on vacation for what seems like a month. he only has about 48 more hours of vacation time. my question is... when his vacation time runs out what happens? does his clock just start running again?

If for example a game is 3 days per move, the person has all of their vacation time {or whatever is remaining If they've taken vacation time before]

plus the 3 days on the game [Or whatever time they have left on the game when they went on vacation].

When you run out of Vacation time does it gradually go back up?

Vacation time is reset to 40 days on January 1st.

Here is what happened to me with vacation time with an opponent.  He went on vacation I believe in December and ran out of his vacation time.  And as someone else said all vacation time starts over in January.  So  I had to experience 80 days of vacation time plus the set time for the game.  Here my way of dealing with this problem for the future.  I look at a player's record and see how long they have been with www.chess.com  and how many games they have played.  I also look at vacation time and if they have taken any I don't play them.  I have been a member for over a year and have never used any vacation time at all.  I never intend to use any except in an emergency.  My games are set for a 5 day time limit.  That is enough time to make a move.  I have had some players that wanted to play me that had vacation time and pleaded for play.  Sorry no deal.  I told them in a nice way.  There are too many players out there that are willing to play chess without jerking your chain with unnecessary vacation time.  In a game with 5 day time limit, for most situations that is 4 days for vacation for every move.  How much do you need?

Soooo... can someone tell me where you can find out how much vac. time a person has used/has left?  Maybe it's staring me in the face, but I can't seem to locate the info for this one person I'm waiting on in a tournament.  I have a feeling their time is almost up, but it would be nice to know.

@Jedimaster that sucks!  I too like to take long move times and avoid using vacation time, but I had to use it recently for the first time as I was away on business, and couldn't be sure of 'net access where I was going to for a few days.  Not exactly an emergency, but sometimes the unexpected comes up.

I recently used vacation time because I was on vacation with my family and I also use it when away on business and unsure of net access too. Vacation time is useful for me..........genuine reasons but I can understand the frustrstions if it is abused.

    @ Monado (or anyone else):

I want to find out how much vac. time my opponent has left, not how much I have left myself.

we're currently re-thinking how vacation allocation works. the current system isn't great because new people can come and then go on vacation and then waste 40 days. so... i think we're going to make people earn their time via accrual with a ceiling. we're also going to tier the ceiling for free/gold/platinum members differently. they will also accrue at different rates.

but i think we can all agree that having someone go on vacation and then timeout 40 days later stinks.

we can also agree that in a few months there are going to be a LOT of people upset because they don't have enough vacation time left and are going to lose on time.

anyway, we're noodling on this. any thoughts are appreciated :)

Maybe points could have something to do with accrual as well.  I guess the thought being that the more time you spend here the more time you deserve.  Also the more time you spend here the less likely you are to take advantage of the vacation system.  Just a thought.

i think that only payed members should get vacation. unlimited vacation at that. People that pay are not going to just sit on vacation and waste money. Those members that payed are serious about the game.

That makes a lot of sense.  In addition no one goes on vacation for 40 days without planning.  If you know you're going you should try to finish your games.  I realize this isn't always realistic because your opponent could be ON VACATION!  Now there are instances where people have emergencies and chess.com isn't that important, but maybe that means your rating shouldn't be that important either.  It's a quandry.  Maybe time/move could be a factor as well.  Once again just a thought.

What do you think of these:

NO VACATIONS ON TOURNAMENTS... since one joined knowing the "number of days per move", then anyone exceeding them would be considered defaulting from any exceeded game format.

VACATIONS FOR NON-TOURNAMENT GAMES ONLY... sounds fair, right?

Good idea, Tunatin! Allow creation of NO VACATION TOURNAMENTS.
