I always wanted a program that would show me, with different colored squares, the possible moves, and protected squares.   This is how i imagine the board when i am playing and i'm surprised how hard it is to find a program that does what i want.  the more depth it could have the cooler.

 

does anyone know what im talking about?  the closest ive seen is:

 doesn't really hit the nail on the head but it is still cool though.

On an interesting note, I was recently at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City and saw an installation of this program in a technology-themed exhibit about "new ways to display information." I stared at it for some time wondering whether the fact that it plays a rather poor game of chess had any relevance to its artistic merit.
