Chess.com Greeters!

Chess.com needs your help!  We just released a new "Greeting" feature that welcomes new registrants to the community, and we need volunteers!

What is a Greeter and what do they do?
When a new person registers on the site, they are given an option to play a greeter in echess.  A greeter is a member who volunteers to play new registrants in echess games.  The greeter will welcome the new member and help answer any questions about the site. If you decide to be a greeter, you may be randomly selected to play in the game.  Our system will automatically create the game and add it to your list of current echess games.

How do I become a greeter?
Becoming a greeter is easy.  First, your account must be at least 1 month old.  Second, simply visit your echess settings page and scroll down towards the bottom where you see "Chess.com Greeter", and click the 'Be a greeter' checkbox.  You may also specify how many games you are willing to play -- the more the better!

We would like to have as many greeters as possible!  The more greeters we have, the more likely a new registrant is to stay active and get involved in the community.  Plus, it gives you more people to play chess and interact with!

Sounds like a great idea.

So if I become a greeter, do I get to put some sort of limit on how many games I play in simultaneously?  Or does this mean that if I become a greeter I am innundated with games?

Yes, on the echess settings page, you can specify the maximum number of games you're willing to play against new members.  That way you won't be spammed with new games.  By default we set max games to 10 when you decide to be a greeter, so no one should have this problem.

Thanks for the reply...greeting sounds like something I want to do when my college-related time commitments lighten up.

By echess games do you mean correspondence games (or online chess, or whatever we are calling it) and are the games rated?

Yeah, they are the correspondence games, and they are unrated, and at a 3 day/move time control.

Expect a few games to come quickly. I've already gotten two myself.

  • Echess is short for email chess(sorry, the internal dev lingo snuck in there), which is the main type of chess we offer here(i.e. not LIVE chess, which is the fancy javascript type that is still in beta)
  • The game will NOT be rated -- you have nothing to lose(or gain, if you were hoping to prey on innocent newbies)
  • We track statistics on greeters and how many welcome games they've played.  I'm not saying you'll get anything super cool like a custom trophy for your efforts, but the chess gods ARE watching.

Do newbies get to pick the rating range of their opponent? It might be nice to add if it isn't.

I thought about this and if the idea of being able to choose a range is used, maybe the range should be split into 3 parts. Maybe there should be an under 1200, 1200-1600, and 1600+. This prevents newbies from requesting unavailable ratings and allows more greeters from having a chance to get selected.

"echess" is good; "correspondence" chess is totally out of date.

However, "email-chess" is clearest, I think .

Well I'm in and have my first game going...I think it will work out well and I'll gladly puff out my chest as a chess.com advocate.

Great Idea,

Joe
