The "Mentalist" had an amusing chess battle ongoing through an episode, unfortunately the game didn't actually work if you tried to play it out.  The show "Cheers" had an amusing chess battle between a bartender and a billionaire.  The bartender made a move so bad that the brilliant billionaire was thrown off and allowed himself to be checkmated.  Bartender said, "Well, you shouldn't have moved your cardinal-bub."   "Bishop!"  the loser yelled, "He is called a Bishop!"

That wasn't it.  Come to think of it, there was a fair bit of chess on Cheers, compared to most shows at least.  There were a few times it appeared.  That was Frasier and Woody.  There was a match between Sam and Robin, where Robin (the billionaire) bet a week's salary.

What was the movie, where the computer offers to play chess, but the kid says he want's to play global thermal nuclear war?

War Games... the kid is Matthew Broderick.  I loved that movie!  Kid hacker!

It was not chess, it was Tic-Tac-Toe....

You're wrong.  Tic tac toe was used at the end of the film to try to teach WOPR about futility.  Steve was referring to earlier just as David (Matthew Broderick) started the game of global thermoneuclear war.

Ted Danson plays chess so it's understandible that there are chess scenes in Cheers and CSI. He was in the movie "Knights of the South Bronx" as well.

If you look, it's quite possible there is a chess scene in Becker as well.
