What do you guys think about Tobey Maguire as Bobby Fischer?

So I recently heard that David Fincher, the director of Fight Club and Zodiac to name a few, is going to direct this new movie called Pawn Sacifice about Bobby Fischer and his life leading up to the Spassky mach....

It all sounds cool until I heard Tobey Maguire might be casted as Fischer (he is producing it). Although nothing is official yet, and I don't know about you guys but I really don't want Maguire to be Fischer. I just cant picture that little guy playing him. What do you guys think?

Here's an article on it: http://www.cinematical.com/2010/03/15/david-fincher-in-talks-for-pawn-sacrifice/

Very different body types and vocal ranges.

    We'll see I guess.

I can see Maguire carrying it off at least as well as any 'big name' in Hollywood...

Who else to cast?  Hayden Christensen?  Jude Law? ....?

It's interesting that you'd mention vocal ranges, is it a musical?  By chance have you come across Fischer's unreleased album he recorded in secret in the 60s?  I heard he couldn't sing worth a darn, probably much more valuable now after his death.

I don't think Tobey's look or his voice matters.

I'm glad that the Fight Club director is doing it, it's nice that it is actually an experienced well-known director. I'll be very glad if there are some big star names, even if the movie isn't to our satisfaction chess-wise.

Tobey Maguire WILL be the star of Pawn Sacrifice, so it is confirmed, not "might".

Tobey in fact, does look a lot like Bobby Fischer, maybe not as tall, but the hair and everything seems pretty accurate. Hopefully the movie will stir more interest in the game--I recommend everyone go see it the weekend that it comes out for maximum effect...

The one problem is, the movie is set to release in 2013, and is only in pre-production. So we're going to have to wait.

I think we all might be in grave danger! That movie just might turn out to be the biggest bomb ever made.

I hadn't thought of this... if I see a chess board with a black square in the bottom right corner, or the queens starting on different files... it's not like it will ruin the movie for me, that'd be silly... but I seriously hope the standard for chess is higher than these super common errors Smile

Any boards with actual positions on them will be a bonus, they need to hire Silman.

Fischer was a big, strapping man and Maguire is a little pipsqueak, doesn't seem like a good match to me.

Alas, Boris Karloff is gone, too . . .

    I fear it will be a monster movie anyway . . .

Yeah but they had John Rhys-Davies, a 6 foot tall guy play the dwarf in the hobbit movie... so I dunno, maybe they can do some movie magic.

Breifly looking it up online, seems Fischer was 6" taller than Mcguire (5' 8" vs 6' 2"), maybe they can get him some shoes with 6" soles... or stilts or something.

Yes, but what maguire gives up in height he makes up in "spidey sense".  He'll do fine...

More important.. who's going to be Spassky???

If I am the director I will put a lot of problems and puzzle in the movie, just to say that THIS IS CHESS theme MOVIE. (or... a very bad idea).

My mistake, early(ish) here and I had obviously forgotten about the "Magic of Hollywood". Good catch, I'll wind my neck in. Laughing

I think Robin Williams would have made a good Spassky. Bit too old now though. I hope the movie does well. It's about time it was done properly - Bobby Fischer's life story is a movie-maker's dream.
