I was just wondering on chess.com (I emphasise!) what would people consider a good rating...

Would you say it needs to be over 2000 or between 1600 and 1800 for example!

Interesting topic because it is surely a matter of opinion but was just wondering what people thought... thanks

A good rating is about 1600+. The world average rating is about 1700.

I don't play very often but I've achieved over 2000.

I thought the average was 1200. That's why here, and at most every site, we start at that.

yes but that is not that high standard even though in England that is considered not bad - it is all relative i suppose!

AnthonyCG - is that the world average for online chess or real chess....

I've always felt anything 1900+ is a strong rating.

I think it's the average USCF player. I could be mistaking that for the average club player though.

The average adult USCF tournament player is rated about 1450. Many beginners start out with ratings of 1000 or so, with scholastic players starting out at around 600. The average of all USCF players is about 1100.

chess_lifelong, your profile says:

"in my day I was graded around 220 (BCF GRADE) or 2360 (ELO)!"

Can i ask please, when was that ?  When was "your day" ?

Just curious

You believe his profile? I don't , no former 2300 level player would be proud of beating players below 1700 and he keeps bragging of this here! His profile gives a birthdate that would make him 39, but the picture there is definitely of someone older than 39! Is it his grandfather? Laughing

Good players are rated about 300 points higher than you, no matter what your rating is.

Reb do you want to shut up - you may doubt me, that is your choice but can you not start insulting my looks and how i look for my age. If you knew the situation, then I don't think you would say that.

I am not proud I have just decided to post every game but I am stopping now... due to the abuse I have been getting!

I do not mean to annoy people but it is clearly not what people want so that was the last game I will ever submit.

guys i thought you were all aware that chess_lifelong lost a game and vowed to never play chess ever again but he decided not to after his son was bullied for not being a good chess player so chess_lifelong started to play chess again and all these games he won were part of his montage.

I thought that the Elo rating system was set up so there would be an average rating of 1500 with a standard deviation around 300.
