There is a difference between best and favorite. For example, I like the English but I don't necessarily think it is the absolute strongest first move. I wouldn't know.

I don't have a particular favourite opening, its whatever takes my fancy at the time. All i need to know or care about, is will it give me equality or an advantage.

Ruy Lopez, Open Sicilian, Advance variations of French/Caro-Kann as White.

Schvenigen Sicilian or Semi-Tarrasch as Black.

I don't know much about openings yet, but the books and articles I've read recommend newer players not get too hung up about them and play basic openings that help teach tactics. So I use the Italian game or the scotch as white. For black, I usually use the Pirc or KID to keep my options open.
