Play Nxe5 and you have fallen for a trap.  There can be variations and better defense, I am just showing one of it.  This is called Blackburne Gambit.

The second post was for someone trying to say play e4...as the move list provided is from the 1st move.

Just 4.c3 looks ok? And if 4...b5 maybe 5.Bxf7+,Kxf7 6.cxd4 += IMO  ... Im sure the real analysis is published somewhere though.

If u ask what is the best 4th move for white, he/she can play 4. Nxd4, 4. c3 or 4. 0-0, with an advance in any case. An usual mistake is, when you oponent play a weird move as here 3.... Nd4?! in the opening, you think u need to play something wery energetic to win fast. It isn't necessary: u need to play normal moves, thinking about develompment and the center. He lost one tempo - it is not enough to win fast, but worsened his/her position.

However, if u r in a mood for a risk, u even can try 4. Nxe5!? and after 4... Qg5 of course not 5. Nxf7?? Qxg2 6. Rf1 Qxe4+ 7. Be2 Nf3#, but 5. Bxf7+ Kd8 6. 0-0 Qxe5 7.  Bxg8 Rxg8 8.c3 etc. For a knight, white has two pawns and beter development - I like his/her position more!

 After 1.e4 e5, 2.Nf3 Nc6, 3.Bc4 Nd4?!, 4.N:e5?? Qg5, 5.B:f7+ Kd8, 6.0-0 Q:e5, 7.B:g8 R:g8, 8.c3 Nc6, black has the bishop pair and a relatively safe king (9.d4? Q:e4, 10.Re1 Qg6, or 10.Bg5+ Be7, 11.Re1 Qg6). I don't see enough compensation  for white.

Or  7.

In the last variant, instead of 7.B:g8, immediately 7.c3 can be tried. Now after 7....Nc6, 8. d4 black cannot take on e4: 8....Q:e4, 9.Re1. But he can play 7....Ne6  and again, white has to prove that he has compensation. Objectively, black must win again.

@mandelshtam: thx for correction with 7. c3! Yes, 7. Bxg8 is necessary if black play 5... Ke7.

However,  I am prety sure that after 7. c3 Ne6 white compesation is enough.

I watch 8. d4 Qxe4 9. d5 Nc5 (9.... Qf5 10. de6) 10. Re1 and queen is lost becouse a mate threat at e8. However, black can play 9.... Nf4 with a mate threat at g2, and if 10. Qg4 then Ne2+. Well, then 9. Re1 Qf5 10. d5 Qxf7 11. de6 etc. is possible.

And we can try 8. f4 Qxe4 9. d4 etc. There are also other variations. As I said: white has two pawn, beter development and black king is in the centre! I would no hesitate to play it in a game! (I played 4. Nxe5!?, only in blitz, with a good result).

However, 4. c3 is probablly the best: avoid all complications and obtain a benefit of aditional tempo. This is why experienced players don't play 3... Nd4.

well, a serious test is, if two strong programs play this variant against each other. then oi am sure that black always wins. try it.

seems to me like this gambit trap only works against players who are not great.a simple Bxf7 + displaces then king  and wins a pawn then 0-0 and white is sorted for the game.black cannot get a sufficient attack in next few moves.

My computer likes 4. Nxd4 exd4  5. O-O  Qh4 (or Qf6)   6. d3 with 2/3 pawn advantage in position for White.

If you throw caution out and go 4. Nxe5  Qg5   5. Bxf7+  Kd8  then my computer likes 6. Ng4  Nh6   7. c3 Nc2  8.Qxc2 Qxg4  and White must choose between losing his Bishop (after 9. O-O, 1.1 pawn advantage for Black) and losing his g-pawn (after 9. Bc4 with 1.7 pawn advantage for Black).

 In the last paragraph, after 6. O-O Qxe5 my computer likes 7.d3 Qf6  8.c3 with a little over 1 pawn advantage for Black (in position).
