it is not so easy with white to be specific because black can choose the response.

my advice at your level would be to play e4 and build your basic skills first.

work out your response to the main replies. mainly c5 e5 e6 and plan your games from there.

Your plan with 1. e4 is to head to either the Ruy Lopez, Guiocco Piano, or Scotch Game.  If you like gambits look at the King's Gambit.  If you are playing 1. e4 you must prepare a response to 1....c5 the Sicilian Defense.  There is a lot more but start here.

That's a sound start.  You will learn a lot about the basics of many e4 openings with that.  There have been a number of Ruy Lopez/Spanish tournaments.  Try and get into the next one.  It will really help you.

The English is certainly sound enough for play up through master level play.  I'm not sure about the GMs or IMs, but when am I honestly going to compete with them?  Perhaps the English suffers a slight disadvantage statistically, but that means nothing at our level.  Unless the opening has been solidly refuted, any opening that you are comfortable with is perfectly fine.

I would recommend you the Giuoco Piano. It's a good starting point, and very fun to play:

i think the GMs would disagree with you. my games dbase shows many of our top players using it as recently as last year.

an opening used by Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov, Kramnik et al can not be dismissed in this manner.

however i would not recommend it to beginners as it is far too complex to understand the nuances that it provides.

Wikipedia's a good place to look up openings: although a proper book is probably best. John Watson's book: Mastering the Chess Openings (2vol) covers all the major ones. The Everyman Chess "Starting Out" Series is also good

There is nothing wrong with the english opening. Several world champions had it in their white repertoire: Botvinnik, Petrosian, Smyslov. According to chess assistant the english opening scores better than 1e4.

Personally, I think d4 is a much better opening than e4, and it wins slightly more often for white. I am very comfortable with Queen's Gambit and have a good deal of success with it. For Black, 1. e4 should definately be met with the Sicilian, and I like the Indian System for 1. d4.

Not solidly refuted just disdained by tons of great chess minds. Plus + Would you play differently against a GM? I wouldn't. I'd do the same thing I always do - play an opening that doesn't make me cringe.  I don't believe that you can afford to play an inferior (you can argue whether its inferior, I guess) opening against ANYONE - let alone a GM.  I am comfortable with the Bongcloud attack.  Should I play it?

My point was not about unsound openings.  My point was about openings which are played less often due to their statistics(which Reb pointed out that the English scores better than e4).  I'll repeat myself and be a bit more clear so you can understand me.  A slight statistical edge means nothing at our level.

@Atlas, your ranking is less than mine, I who have just over 100 games of chess to my name, and you feel comfortable to adopt such a position?

I say to the 1500's are you forever consigned!!
